Rasmus Paludan, a politician from the ultra-radical Strum Kurs (Hard Line) party, set fire to a volume of the Holy Quran during a protest in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm on Saturday afternoon. A Kurdish demonstration was also held there at the same time.

Ankara said on Saturday it was canceling a visit by Sweden's defense minister in an attempt to clear Turkey's objections to NATO membership. Sweden needs Turkey's support for its entry into the military alliance. The country is now looking to join NATO amid growing fears following Russia's attack on Ukraine. But NATO member Turkey is blocking it.

Several countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Turkey have condemned the burning of the Quran. "Saudi Arabia calls for the spread of the values of dialogue, tolerance and coexistence and rejects hatred and extremism," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
