The number of people killed in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria is still 15 thousand

The death toll has exceeded 15,000 in Turkey and Syria affected by the powerful earthquake. According to official data, as of Thursday (January 9) morning, 12,391 bodies have been recovered in Turkey and 2,992 in Syria. In total, the death toll now stands at 15,383.

A total of more than 15 thousand people were killed in the terrible earthquake in the Turkey-Syria border region.

The state news agency Anadolu Agency reported that 12,391 people died in the earthquake in Turkey alone, citing Turkey's Disaster Management Bureau early on Thursday (February 9).

Meanwhile, the Syrian Ministry of Health reported that the death toll from the earthquake in government-controlled areas in Syria is more than 1,200. In addition, the White Helmets, a rescue group in rebel-held northwest Syria, said at least 1,600 people had died there.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said his country was working to open two additional border gates to allow humanitarian aid to reach war-torn Syria.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said a conference was planned for next March on sending international aid to Syria and Turkey, which were devastated by Monday's earthquake.

For the first time in 24 years, the Istanbul Stock Exchange said it would be closed for five days following the earthquake.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the disaster-hit area. He admitted that the measures taken for the victims in the country after the major earthquake were insufficient.

Meanwhile, after this terrible accident, various countries have extended their helping hand. Already, the Qatar government has announced to send 10,000 mobile homes and relief materials, enough tents and winter clothes to the victims.

Earlier, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Syria and Turkey in the early hours of Monday (February 6) local time. Shortly after this another earthquake of magnitude 6.7 followed by many more aftershocks.
