Intelligence sources told Jugantar that the meeting took place as part of the government's efforts to reduce tensions with Hefazat Islam and release jailed leaders. Several conditions have been imposed by the government regarding the release of the detained leaders. Hefazat leaders have also promised to accept them.
When asked to know, Maulana Ataullah Hafezzi told Jugantar that we have demanded the release of our leaders and activists who are still in prison. We submitted the demands in writing to the Home Minister. The minister said that he will look into the matter sincerely. When asked whether there was any discussion about the release of Maulana Mamunul Haque, he said, "We have not talked about anyone separately. We have informed the release request of all those who are in jail.
Maulana Mohiuddin Rabbani, Secretary of Hefazat, said that there was a verbal agreement not to be harassed in various matters, including meeting relatives in prison. According to the sources of the meeting, it has been said on behalf of Hefazat that the meeting requested the Home Minister to withdraw all the cases filed in 2013, 2016 and 2021 in the name of Hefazat leaders and activists. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal assured Olamay about the release of Keram.
Apart from this, he promised to arrange meeting and communication with the family members of the prisoners. Last year on March 26, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the custody came under various pressures including continuous arrest operations across the country in cases of violence that took place in various parts of the state including Dhaka, Brahmanbaria and Hathajari in Chittagong. In these cases, more than 1,230 members were arrested across the country, including 30 Hefazat leaders.
Hathajari (Chittagong) representative said that most of the prisoners have been in jail for more than 10 months. The families of the prisoners are in trouble as they are in custody. Many families have become destitute. In this situation, we request the government to release them immediately. The Home Minister promised to make arrangements for family members to meet and communicate with the detainees.
